My husband and I recently traveled to Sichuan China with a small group, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, our host Coco and Garrett impressed us with their deep knowledge and genuine care— they added thoughtful, personal touches that made the trip feel truly special rather than routine. The food alone would have been worth the journey. Every meal was rich with flavor, beautifully prepared and offered a deeper appreciation for Sichuan’s culinary traditions. Beyond that, we were struck by the kindness and warmth of the people we met along the way. We felt welcomed everywhere we went. What surprised us most was how safe and comfortable we felt throughout the trip, which allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience. It sparked a real sense of curiosity and connection to the culture. By the end, we found ourselves in love with China and especially its people. This is a place we would return to ( especially with Garrett and Coco) without hesitation.

As seasoned travelers, we were attracted to the Sichuan trip that Coco, a native of the Sichuan province, and Garrett who lived there for an extensive amount of time, put together because it offered such a unique experience. It was a deep dive into the culture of the Sichuan area that covered both the city of Chengdu and the country side around it. The trip exceeded our expectations. We spent time in areas where we were usually the only westerners around and Chinese people went out of their way to welcome us.
In Chengdu, we covered the usual checklist of museums and the Sichuan opera but this tour gave us time to include an afternoon in people’s park where the locals enjoy everything from finding a spouse to community exercise through tai chi and “square dance” to mahjong and tea. We had the opportunity for a tai chi lesson and played the guqin at the Tao center. Most of us also took advantage of traditional ear cleaning while in the city and of course… shopping!
For us though, the highlight was outside the city. Hiking through ancient cypress trees, visiting the thousand Buddha cliffs and hiking to temples offering views unimaginable. These are experiences that only a small boutique trip like this could offer. The crowning bonus was the personal touch of visiting Coco’s home village and being welcomed by her parents to their home and seeing how families in rural China live.
While English is not primarily spoken in these rural areas, we managed to communicate. Sometimes through the technology of phone apps but sometimes just through facial expressions and gestures. It was definitely an immersive experience in a comfortable environment and everyone in our group agreed that it was a life changing experience.
We look forward to traveling with Coco and Garrett in the future.
